Turnover and the Bad Boss?

by

This is a three-part series on how to attract, hire, and retain top talent.

Welcome to Hiring Made Simple! (And a future book is in the works.) There has been one constant in my career, starting with recruiting top talent as captain of the Kent State University Rugby team. I have a great sense for attracting, selecting, and onboarding people.

Part one of this three-part series is focused on how you can ensure that you have a people-centered champion to lead your hiring and retention efforts.

Current Situation: According to Talentlift.com, 64% of workers may leave their jobs in 2022. And 69% of employers have difficulty filling jobs. Job anxiety is at an all-time high for everyone involved.

Many have heard the line that people don’t quit companies but they quit bosses. Is there a common denominator in the following five reasons people leave jobs?

5 Common Causes of High Employee Turnover:

  • Overwhelmed by work amount
  • Lack of recognition
  • Company culture
  • Poor relationship with manager
  • Lack of flexibility

Are they all a result of a bad boss?

Too often, we’re led to believe that the boss has little to do with all these problems. Instead, we turn to software programs, free snacks in the breakroom, and online training to fix the problems. While these tactics can help, they will never overcome the progressive cancer of a bad boss.

Solution: The Hiring Made Simple 3-Part Model (diagrammed below)

  1. Get a healthy point person (hiring champion)
  2. Offer the right pay (livingwage.mit.edu)
  3. Create a remarkable culture (where people love to work)

Here are the best three steps to achieve #1:

  1. Identify whether they personally have a passion to improve the company and employees.
  2. Determine if they fit your workplace culture. What does your gut instinct say?
  3. Test them to see if they are hungry, humble, and smart. I like the Ideal Team Player assessment. See link below.
